[Barbaro/Contarini]

The Venetian diplomat and merchant Giosafat Barbaro (1413–1494) traveled to the Genoese colony Tana on the Sea of Azov and witnessed the disintegration of the Golden Horde. His account contains some information on China which he obtained from other travelers and people he met in Tana.

Marco Polo (1481)

The earliest printed edition of Marco Polo’s account was a German version printed in Nuremberg in 1477. The second edition was printed in 1481 in Augsburg following a history of Archduke Leopold of Austria and his son William of Austria.
