Sautter travelled from Marseille to Saigon and via Hongkong to Tokyo. After attending a conference of Christian students there and a missionary conference at Shanghai, he visited the Xujiahui (Zikawei) observatory, went north to Peking, the Great Wall, and the Ming tombs. After a second visit to Japan he went to Vladivostok and then returned to Europe by train.
