Lionel Giles: An alphabetical index to the Chinese encyclopaedia

Lionel Giles (comp.): An alphabetical index to the Chinese encyclopaedia 欽定古今圖書集成 Ch’in ting ku chin t’u shu chi ch’êng (London: Printed by order of the Trustees of the British Museum, 1911).

Lionel Giles (1875-1957), son of Herbert Allen Giles (1845-1935), entered the British Museum in 1900. In 1936, he became Keeper of Oriental Printed Books and retired in 1940. The British Museum Library acquired a copy of the Qinding Gujin tushu jicheng, the largest Chinese encyclopaedia ever printed (1726-28), in the late 1870s due to the efforts of William Frederick Mayers.
For a review of this index to the Gujin tushu jicheng see T’oung Pao  12 (1911) 757 f. (Ed. Chavannes)
