Lionel Giles (1875-1957), son of Herbert Allen Giles (1845-1935), entered the British Museum in 1900. In 1936, he became Keeper of Oriental Printed Books and retired in 1940. The British Museum Library acquired a copy of the Qinding Gujin tushu jicheng, the largest Chinese encyclopaedia ever printed (1726-28), in the late 1870s due to the efforts of William Frederick Mayers.
