    The „Introduction to the Chinese Collections“ of Cambridge University Library gives 1872 as year of birth and 1950 as year of death – as most library catalogs do. According to Kam C. Wong: Chinese Policing: History and Reform (New York: Lang, 2009), p. 3, Ernest Alabaster lived from 1872 to 1959.
