Jean-Gabriel Perboyre, C.M. (1802-1840) arrrived in Macau in 1835. He started to work in Henan province, before being transferred to Hubei. In september 1839, Perboyre was one of the first victims of persecutions against Christians. Perboyre was tortured and condemned to death in Wuchang. After confirmation of the sentence, he was executed. His remains were returned to France in 1860. Perboyre was beatified in 1889 and canonized in 1996.
