In 1746, Augustin Haller von Hallerstein SJ (1703-1774) succeeded Ignaz Kögler SJ (1680-1746) as head of the Directorate of Astronomy at the Imperial court at Beijing (Peking). The astronomical observations collected in this volume were edited by the Austrian Maximilian Hell SJ (1720-1792).
